Maintenance Superintendent (Division Head)
NOTE: City-wide classification and compensation study begins July 2014.
The beautiful Southern California coastal City of San Clemente is seeking a highly motivated and experienced individual to serve as the Maintenance Superintendent in the City’s Public Works Department. This newly-created position will serve as the Division Head of the Maintenance Services Division, overseeing 26 employees (supervisory, maintenance, and clerical staff), maintenance contracts, and a $10.7M operating budget.
The Maintenance Superintendent reports directly to the Public Works Director/City Engineer and is responsible for planning, managing, supervising, and coordinating maintenance services and activities including streets, traffic, City-owned properties, landscaping, beaches, pier, trails, pools, parks, medians, and building maintenance and safety. As a key member of the Public Works Department management team, this is an exciting opportunity to implement recommendations of a recently-concluded maintenance study that resulted in the consolidation of all maintenance functions under one division, and implementation of the City’s new Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for the Maintenance Services Division. The position will coordinate assigned activities with the Beaches, Parks, and Recreation Department and other City departments, divisions, and outside agencies, and providing responsible staff assistance to the Public Works Director/City Engineer. The position will require periodic attendance at evening meetings as necessary.
The ideal candidate will have at least seven years of increasingly responsible experience in public works and/or landscape maintenance and construction, or the building trades, including three years of management and supervisory responsibility. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a closely related field.
APPLICATION AND SELECTION PROCEDURE: All applicants must submit a completed City of San Clemente application form and supplemental questionnaire in order to be considered. Applications will not be accepted by fax or email.
Applications must be submitted via the City’s web site at www.san-clemente.org/jobs. All properly completed applications will be reviewed, and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Examinations for the position may consist of any combination of written, performance, or oral exams to evaluate the applicant’s skill, training, and experience.
Prior to employment, the prospective candidate must successfully complete a background review, medical examination, including drug screen, and be fingerprinted, all at City expense. If selected, written identification showing entitlement to legally work in the United States will be required.
